Arctic Monkeys - Suck It And See

Ah, o Arctic Monkeys. Junto com os Strokes, eles abriram as portas do mundo Indie pra muita gente. Eu fui uma dessas pessoas. A primeira vez que ouvi falar da banda foi com uma certa música chamada A Certain Romance, do primeiro álbum deles, mas nessa altura eles já haviam lançado o segundo, o Favourite Worst Nightmare, em cuja turnê a banda passou pelo extinto Tim Festival.

Depois de um álbum um tanto quanto polêmico como o Humbug, mais pesado e, porque não, mais dark, os macacos lançam o Suck It And See.

De primeira ouvida o álbum me pareceu continuar na linha Humbug. She’s Thunderstorms porém já não é tão agressiva quanto My Propeller, que iniciava aquele, mas tem uma guitarra envolvente e um nome, sim, um nome que me chamou a atenção.

A segunda faixa já muda minha opinião. Black Treacle tem ares mais próximos ao segundo álbum da banda.

Minha opinião muda novamente com Brick By Brick. Essa faixa poderia estar no Humbug perfeitamente. O terceiro álbum dos Monkeys, produzido por Josh Homme, recebeu vários comentários relativos a influencia deste e da certa semelhança com a sua banda, Queens Of The Stone Age, nas músicas. E Brick By Brick, apesar de não ser do Humbug, é uma das faixas que mais lembra essa outra banda.

The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala, escolhida como novo single, tem um clipe de certa forma nostálgico. Nostalgia é um sentimento que envolve o álbum todo, na minha opinião. Quando o Alex canta ‘to sing another fuckin’ shalalala’, eu penso nos shows deles, com toda a platéia cantando junto. Com um baixo marcante e uma letra bem interessante, essa música ganha facilmente o posto de minha preferida do álbum, e até uma das minhas preferidas da banda.

Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair foi o primeiro single do album, e nela também predomina o clima de Humbug, mas este clima vai sumindo a medida que as músicas vão passando, e o álbum vai se aproximando do Favourite Worst Nightmare. Deixando o Suck It And See como um álbum entre esses dois..

E conforme o álbum vai chegando ao fim pode-se perceber que os macaquinhos cresceram e seu som mudou. Eles ainda são a mesma banda, o sotaque do Alex Turner falando ainda é difícil de entender, mas eles mudaram. Não exatamente para melhor, muito menos para pior. Só mudaram.

E enquanto That’s Where You’re Wrong vai tocando, é impossível a nostalgia não tomar conta e no final não se lembrar de quando o álbum terminava com A Certain Romance.

Ah, the Arctic Monkeys. Along with The Strokes, they've opened the doors of the Indie World to a lot of people. I am one of them. The first time I've heard about the band was about a certain music called A Certain Romance, from the first album of them, altought at this time they've already release the second one, Favourite Worst Nightmare, when the band came to Brazil to play on the extint Tim Festival.

After such a polemic album as Humbug, heavier and, why not, darker, the Monkeys release Suck It And See.

At the first listen, the disc seemed to continue at the same line of Humbug. She’s Thunderstorms is not as agressive as My Propeller, which was the first track of that one, but has an envolving guitar and a name, yes, a name that called my attention..

The second track changes my opinion. Black Treacle is more similar to the second album of the band. And my opinion changes agian with Brick By Brick. This track could be perfectly on Humbug. The third album of the Monkeys, producted by Josh Homme, recieved many comments about his influence and a certain similarity with his band, Queens Of The Stone Age, on the songs. And although Brick By Brick is not on Humbug, it reminds me this other band.

The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala, chosen as the new single, has, in a certain way, a nostalgic clip. Nostalgia is a feeling present in the whole disc, in my opinion. When Alex sings ‘to sing another fuckin’ shalalala’, I think about their concerts, with the crowd singing along. With a marking bass and interesting lyrics, this song easily gets the post of my favorite of the album, and even one of my favorites of the band.

Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair was the first single of the album, and in it there is also a Humbug style, but this style fades out as the album keeps going, getting closer to Favourite Worst Nightmare. Putting Suck It And See between those two.

And as the album is getting closer to the end, you can notice that the little monkeys grew up and their sound has changed. They still the same band, Alex's accent stills hard to understand, but they've changed. Not exactly for better, and of course not for worse. They've just changed

And while That’s Where You’re Wrong is playing, it's impossible to contain the nostalgia and don't remebr when the album used to finish with A Certain Romance.
